ScrapMento
ScrapMento is a mobile app that encourages intuitive but diverse options for customization and creativity, offering an organized space for travelers and everyday adventurers to document their journeys.
The Team:
6 UI/UX & Graphic Designers
My Role:
Team Lead
I organized meetings, managed sprint deliveriables, and was involved in every part of the design process. This includes early design sketching, digitally drawing graphics, and creating wireframes.

User Research.
User research for ScrapMento included conducting a survey with 50 respondents, interviews, and creating a user persona from key findings.
Key Findings:
-
60% of survey respondents solo travel or have solo travelled at least once.
-
98% of survey respondents document casual outings.
-
The majority of research participants want keep their travels private share them with only friends and family.
-
Research participants have varying levels of design experience.
Problem Statement.
Solo travelers want to manage their digital and physical souvenirs from both travel and everyday experiences.
How can we create a product that helps users to organize their memories and supports varying levels of customization?
Early Design.
After spending time ideating and selecting an idea based on our key insights from user research, we sketched and created low-fidelity wireframes. We also created a style guide and hand-drawn graphic assets as we moved to creating mid-fidelity and high-fidelty wireframes before the interactive prototype.

Solution.

Map for Visual Organization of Adventures
In addition to viewing photos and digitized artifacts from travel and everyday adventures within a scrapbook, users can visually track their experiences on the ScrapMento map. When a location is attached to a scrapbook page by a user, the scrapbook and particular page are indicated in that location on the interactive map. Users can zoom in and out to see their trail, and can select a pin to view the scrapbook and page the photo comes from.
Creative Flexibility with Efficient Templates & Customizable Pages
To support varying levels of design experience and customization, users can create a scrapbook from a variety of templates or start from scratch. The left images show an example template page before and after the user adds their own content. Users can also search for inspiration before starting a scrapbook on the homepage, where they can browse templates, sticker collections, and page backgrounds.

Scan Feature to Save Physical Artifacts on the Spot
To make it easier to keep track of physical souvenirs and artifacts, users can use the scan feature within the app to add digitized artifacts to a scrapbook page directly. These scans can also be added to the camera roll for later use. Users can also take photos from within the app, to quickly add images to a page without scanning or searching through their photo library.
Reflection.
Through this experience, we learned that gathering key insights from research and testing throughout the design process is important for creating improved iterations. We also learned that defining additional artifacts for key insights would help to prevent later organizational changes. For example, a site map would help to further clarify information hierarchy and organization within the app earlier in the design process. And lastly, frequent communication between team members is important for creating an app that is both visually and functionally consistent.
